A new study by Danish Academics, entitled ‘Ethnic Diversity and Social Trust: A Narrative and Meta-Analytical Review’, has found that ethnic diversity has a negative impact on communities because it erodes trust.
One of the purposes of the research was to see to know if whether “continued immigration and corresponding growing ethnic diversity” was having a positive impact on community cohesion, surprisinly the study found the opposite to be the case.
The analysts concluded, “We find a statistically significant negative relationship between ethnic diversity and social trust across all studies.” Based on existing literature and after carrying out a meta-analysis of 1,001 estimates from 87 studies,
Also related to the study, Professor of Politics at the Birkbeck University of London, Eric Kaufmann, tweeted: “Higher diversity *is* significantly associated with lower trust in communities, even when controlling for deprivation.”
The study was conducted by academics Peter Thisted Dinesen and Merlin Schaeffer from the University of Copenhagen and Kim Mannemar Sønderskov from Aarhus University.
Without question “Diversity is a strength” is an assertion that have been carry out over countries, workplaces and schools but it would be good to question if this claim is more positive than negative. Can you think of ways where it can be a weakness?
